0169 - Dimmuborgir park, Iceland.
Description
This is Dimmuborgir, Iceland. Only nature, no human intervention, well, more or less, anyway the preservation of Dimmuborgir park had a huge impact. Around 1940 the area was silting up with wind-blown sand and the southernmost areas already totally submerged. To counter this, a conservation program was initiated. In 1942 the owners of Dimmuborgir handed over ownership of the area to the Soil Conservation Service. To begin with, the land was fenced off to protect it from sheep grazing. Furthermore, stone barriers were erected and lyme-grass was settled in the southern part of the area.
